Larry Ainsworth - Common Formative AssessmentsThe essential purpose of Ainsworth's book is to present a "how-to" guide for educators and leaders on the topic of common formative assessments as they relate to other instruction and assessment practices. Ainsworth presents a roadmap for leaders to effectively implement common assessments and other standards-based practices in their schools. Antecedents of Excellence - Douglas ReevesAntecedents of excellence are the strategies employed by a specific school that lead to academic achievement and the attainment of other system-wide goals. Antecedents include causes, instructional strategies, administrative structures, and conditions for learning. Click the link above to access a separate wiki page on antecedents of excellence.
Stephen White - Beyond The NumbersIn Beyond the Numbers, Stephen White formulates the foundational principles for data analysis and provides a number of strategies necessary to turn that analysis into action. The book is required reading for the summer PLC retreat, and Dr. White will be one of the lead presenters at the 2-day workshop. There are a number of concepts that Dr. White explores in the book that are pertinent to Sweet Home's examination of leadership including, the rearview-mirror effect, antecedents of excellence, accountability, collaboration, "canaries in the coal mine", and triangulation of data. The text uses scenarios extensively and hypothetical data to help leaders construct meaning with the ideas. Click on the link above to view a separate wiki page on Beyond The Numbers.
Stephen White - Show Me The PoofThe Center for Performance Assessment (CPE) has created a number of data analysis tools that can be used to examine antecedents of excellence. The CPE describes data in terms of a framework for how it will be used. The framework includes four types of data: teaching, learning, improving, and persuading. When data is described in terms of the acts of teaching, learning, improving, and persuading, it is hard to escape or ignore the need to take some action based on the lessons learned from the data. The framework is based on the premise that action must follow analysis. School leaders can modify teaching and learning conditions, and improve the quality of leadership implementation, routines, and work habits.
